Alabama State Comptroller Bob Childree Retires

April 30, 2009

MONTGOMERY- Alabama State Comptroller Robert L. Childree will retire today after 35 years of service to the state. Prior to his appointment as State Comptroller in 1987, Childree worked as a governmental accountant, becoming the highest ranking governmental accountant in the State Merit System.

“Bob’s retirement means Alabama is losing one of its most dedicated public servants,” said State Finance Director Jim Main. “But I know that just because he no longer works here does not mean he will no longer care what happens in state government. I am confident Bob will continue to contribute to Alabama in a number of positive ways, just as he has for the past three decades.”

Childree transformed the Office of Comptroller during his tenure. He directed the development and implementation of Alabama's Financial Resource Management System (FRMS), a fully integrated computerized financial system that processes state procurement, payroll and personnel functions. Alabama also wrote new fiscal and accounting policy in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for Governments and issued the state’s first Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Alabama’s CAFR has received seventeen consecutive unqualified audit opinions. The state has also earned the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the past nine fiscal years.

Childree has also held several leadership positions in national professional associations, including President of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers (NASACT), President of the National Association of State Comptrollers (NASC), President of the Association of Governmental Accountants (AGA), Montgomery Chapter, Chairman of the State of Alabama Governmental Accounting and Auditing Training (GAAT) Advisory Board, State of Alabama Certified Public Manager Advisory Board, and State Representative for Alabama to the Federal Government on the Cash Management Improvement Act.

Childree was an original member of the Southern Alliance of States and was an active participant in the development and implementation of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) in the state of Alabama. He received the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) in February of 2006 and in 2008, the AGA National President’s Award recognized his outstanding chairmanship of AGA’s Financial Management Standards Board.

Childree is a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a bachelor of science in commerce and business administration with a concentration in accounting.
