Ten Day "Sign or Veto" Deadline Approaches

June 15, 2007

MONTGOMERY, Ala., June 15, 2007 – Sunday midnight, June 17, marks the end of the 10-day period Gov. Riley has to sign or veto any bills that passed on the final day of the 2007 Regular Session. In general, this has been a successful session for the Governor, State Finance Director and Executive Budget Office.

The budgets were passed with the State’s General Fund budget slightly over 2% more than the Governor recommended. The Education Trust Budget is the largest in the State’s history and included funding for most of the initiatives recommended by the Governor. Pay increases for active and retired state employees and teachers also survived the session. Amazingly enough, all of this was accomplished without additional taxes imposed on the citizens of Alabama. Fortunately, on the other hand, there were a lot of bills that died that could have been detrimental to the operations of State government.

State Finance Director James Allen Main stated, “This type of success is only possible through the collaborative efforts of many, including the Executive Budget Office staff and the Governor’s Policy and Legislative staff.”
